LAS VEGAS – Investigators confirmed that Metro police arrested the driver who caused a fiery crash on the Las Vegas Strip on Friday after an officer saved him.

Court records show that Alexander Dawkins is being charged with DUI, failing to keep a travel lane clear or making an improper lane change, and failing to show proof of insurance.

Around 4:30 p.m., Dawkins was driving south on Las Vegas Boulevard in a white sedan when he crossed the center line and hit a palm tree, police said.

The accident took place in front of the Venetian Las Vegas. Police say that the car caught fire while the driver was still inside.

When the police officer got there, he and another man were able to break a window and get the driver out. The officer got help for breathing in smoke.

Records showed that Dawkins was picked up by police on Friday at University Medical Center. He went to court on Saturday.

A judge did not set bail because there had not yet been a criminal complaint filed in the case. Monday, it wasn’t clear what drug was linked to the DUI charge.
