Record Warmth Shatters March Mark in Vegas as Strong Wind Advisory Takes Hold

LAS VEGAS, NV — Southern Nevada posted another early-season warmth event as temperatures at Harry Reid International Airport climbed into the mid-80s on March 1, challenging or exceeding the historical March 1 record high. Meteorologists say a strong ridge of high pressure brought the unseasonable heat, pushing outdoor temperatures well above typical early-spring averages.
The warm weekend turned into a Wind Advisory event issued by the National Weather Service for today, with west and southwest winds expected to gust between 20 and 30 mph and locally stronger to 45–50 mph in the Western Mojave Desert and adjacent high wind corridors. Officials warn that those winds could disrupt travel along key routes, especially Interstate 15 through open desert stretches.
As a result, local emergency management agencies are urging residents and visitors to secure loose outdoor objects, anticipate gusty travel conditions, and stay weather aware. Such high winds can also lead to blowing dust and occasional downed limbs or power disruptions in wind-prone areas.
The contrast between the rare March heat and the sudden wind event highlights the unpredictability of spring weather in the Southwest. Forecasters say the pressure pattern that brought warmth will eventually flatten, allowing temperatures to return closer to normal and winds to subside later in the week.
