Renown Health Secures Historic $40M Gift from Philanthropist Tom Golisano to Build Northern Nevada’s First Standalone Children’s Hospital

RENO, NV — In a historic leap forward for pediatric medicine in Nevada, Renown Health announced it has received a transformational $40 million donation from entrepreneur and civic leader Tom Golisano to fund the development of a dedicated, standalone children’s hospital.
The multi-million-dollar gift—the single largest philanthropic donation in Renown’s history—will replace the current children’s hospital setup, which operates across fragmented floors of the Renown Regional Medical Center tower, and establish a dedicated facility serving children across Northern Nevada, Lake Tahoe, and Eastern California.
The investment also marks the official westward expansion of the Golisano Children’s Alliance, a national cooperative network uniting premier pediatric institutions to share best practices, clinical trials, and specialized care delivery protocols.

Replacing a Hospital-Within-a-Hospital Model
Currently, Renown Children’s Hospital functions as an integrated department inside Renown Regional Medical Center on Mill Street.
While the program has long provided pediatric inpatient and emergency care, its physical integration within the adult medical tower has constrained clinical capacity as Washoe County’s population surges.
Under the new initiative, the standalone facility will centralize all pediatric subspecialties under one roof.
The planned campus will expand the region’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), alongside dedicated pediatric surgical suites, specialized cancer infusion bays, and outpatient pediatric behavioral health clinics.
Ending the Medical Migration to California and Utah
Because Northern Nevada has historically lacked a standalone pediatric hospital, hundreds of local children diagnosed with complex pediatric cancers, rare genetic conditions, or severe trauma each year must be airlifted or driven to tertiary centers in Sacramento, San Francisco, or Salt Lake City.
Joining the Golisano Children’s Alliance connects Renown to a national network of pediatric hospitals backed by more than $750 million in catalytic philanthropy.
The alliance allows regional medical staff to collaborate directly on pediatric research protocols, clinical registries, and physician recruitment drives.

“Children and families deserve access to world-class pediatric care close to home, without the added emotional and financial burden of traveling out of state,” said hospital leadership. “Mr. Golisano’s visionary gift provides the foundational bedrock to build a hospital engineered exclusively around the needs of children.”
Architectural schematics, master campus site selections, and state health licensing filings will proceed through Washoe County and the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health in the months ahead.
