Starting October, E‑Bike Riders Face New Speed and Safety Rules

By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, August 7, 2025 9:40 am

The City of Las Vegas has approved new regulations governing the use of e‑bikes and e‑scooters. Under the ordinance passed Wednesday night, operating bicycles, electric bicycles, or electric scooters on sidewalks along Fremont Street between Main Street and Seventh Street will be prohibited. These restrictions will be clearly marked with posted signage. The rules also target unsafe riding practices—including wheelies, stunts, excessive speeds, and other reckless conduct—across public roads, sidewalks, city parks, recreational facilities, and public plazas.

To enhance visibility and rider safety, e‑bikes and e‑scooters must not exceed 15 miles per hour when used in city‑operated spaces. The vehicles must also be equipped with a white lamp visible at least 500 feet ahead, a red reflector and a rear-facing red light seen from 300–500 feet, and an audible signal device like a bell capable of being heard from at least 100 feet. Helmet use is mandatory for riders under the age of 18.

Violations of the ordinance are classified as misdemeanors, with fines scheduled as follows: $150 for a first offense, $300 for a second, and $500 for subsequent violations. The rules take effect October 1, and enforcement will be carried out by city marshals and Metropolitan Police Department officers. The new ordinance aligns closely with existing Clark County rules to maintain consistency across jurisdictions.
