Building on Week 1 testimony—which included medical autopsy findings from Clark County Medical Examiner Dr. Lisa Gavin and recorded 2008 federal proffer audio—Chief Deputy District Attorneys Binu Palal and Marc DiGiacomo shifted focus toward proving the motive and command structure of the South Side Compton Crips.

Under Nevada’s aiding-and-abetting statutes (NRS 195.020), the state is not required to prove Davis pulled the trigger, but rather that he planned the ambush, secured the .40-caliber Glock, and provided the firearm to shooters inside the white Cadillac.

Investigators and gang specialists testified regarding the violent rivalry between the South Side Compton Crips and the Mob Piru Bloods (associated with Marion “Suge” Knight and Death Row Records), detailing how the assault on Davis’s nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, in the MGM Grand lobby triggered an immediate retaliatory hunt across the Strip corridor.

The Defense Mounts “Fact vs. Fiction” Counterattack

Defense attorney Michael Sanft aggressively challenged the state’s reliance on decades-old interviews and Davis’s 2019 self-published memoir, Compton Street Legend.

During cross-examinations, the defense highlighted that all other occupants of the Cadillac—Orlando Anderson, Deandre “Big Dre” Smith, and Terry “Bubble Up” Brown—are deceased, leaving the state without surviving eyewitnesses to corroborate who was inside the vehicle.

Sanft argued that Davis’s storytelling was exaggerated bravado meant to monetize hip-hop folklore rather than verifiable truth, emphasizing the lack of physical fingerprints or recovered weapons tying Davis to the scene.

“What they are telling you, they are representing as fact, when it’s really fiction,” Sanft told jurors during arguments. “There are no physical facts connecting Duane Davis to that weapon.”
