For the second time this week, an American Airlines flight departing Las Vegas for Charlotte ran into mechanical trouble, prompting an unscheduled diversion to Dallas-Fort Worth. Flight 2981, which lifted off just before 1 p.m., reported a potential issue midair and was rerouted accordingly. As of mid-afternoon, FlightAware tracking data showed the aircraft had yet to land in Dallas .
This incident follows a dramatic mid-week scare when American Flight 1665—an Airbus A321 with 153 passengers and six crew—had to return to Harry Reid International after smoke and flames erupted from one engine just minutes after takeoff. Thankfully, the aircraft taxied back safely around 8:20 a.m., and no injuries were reported .
Though aircraft emergencies are alarming, professional crews ensured both flights landed without harm. Still, these repeated disruptions in such a short time raise questions about airline maintenance, regulatory oversight, and traveling confidence.
