CLARK COUNTY, NV — Nevada State Police collision reconstruction investigators are examining the cause of a catastrophic early-morning crash that claimed two lives and triggered a vehicle fire on Interstate 15 northeast of the Las Vegas metropolitan area.

The multi-vehicle collision occurred along the southbound corridor of Interstate 15 near mile marker 77, in the desert expanse adjacent to the Valley of Fire State Park turnoff.

According to preliminary investigative briefings released by the Nevada State Police (NSP) Highway Patrol Division, emergency communications centers received multiple 911 calls reporting a severe collision between a two-door coupe and a four-door sedan, with at least one vehicle engulfed in flames.

First responders arriving on scene located the burning wreckage across the active travel lanes.

Fire crews from Clark County and regional volunteer stations initiated fire suppression operations, bringing the flames under control.

Emergency medical personnel confirmed that both an adult male driver and an adult female driver died at the scene from fatal trauma and fire injuries.

Wrong-Way Dynamics and Extended Highway Detours

NSP investigators noted that one of the passenger vehicles was traveling northbound within the dedicated southbound travel lanes prior to the head-on collision.

The impact caused a rupture in the fuel delivery system, igniting a fire that spread across the carriage of the disabled vehicle.

To preserve the crash site and allow fatal detail investigators to map vehicle trajectories, troopers shut down all southbound lanes of Interstate 15 at Exit 93 (State Route 168 / Glendale-Moapa Road).

Traffic heading into the Las Vegas Valley from Mesquite and Utah was rerouted onto State Route 168 toward U.S. Highway 93, causing regional freight delays.

Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) incident management teams and maintenance engineers were called to evaluate the road surface.

Inspectors verified whether intense thermal heat from the vehicle fire caused structural gouges or asphalt degradation before authorizing the lane reopening.

Forensic Mapping and Coroner Inquiries

State troopers are working with the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner to identify the victims and confirm which vehicle entered the freeway going the wrong way.
