CALLVILLE BAY, NV — A routine Sunday afternoon outing at Lake Mead National Recreation Area turned into a nightmare after a recreational vessel exploded at a marina fuel dock, leaving two residents with life-altering injuries.

The Blast at the Dock

At approximately 3:27 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, emergency crews from the Clark County Fire Department and National Park Service rangers responded to the Callville Bay Marina, about 30 miles east of Las Vegas.

Witnesses described a “huge burst of orange flame” as the vessel, which had just finished refueling, attempted to depart. Jessie Hart, 43, and her husband Mark Michelini were on or near the boat when it was suddenly engulfed. Hart suffered significant burns to her hands and hair, while Michelini remains in critical condition after undergoing multiple surgeries for severe burns to his legs and feet.

Tragic Loss and Heroic Actions

In a heartbreaking turn, the couple’s two-year-old French Bulldog, Aly Capone, did not survive the blast. Despite the chaos, quick-thinking bystanders utilized on-site fire extinguishers to knock down the majority of the flames before firefighters arrived to fully extinguish the blaze at 4:00 p.m.

Ongoing Investigation

Federal investigators are currently examining the vessel’s fuel system to determine the cause. Early reports suggest a “freak accident” involving fuel vapor ignition, though authorities remind all boaters to strictly follow ventilation protocols and maintenance checks before starting engines near fuel pumps.
