Unrest at ICE Office Sparks Tear Gas Response—How Far Should Protests Go?
By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, June 11, 2025 11:56 pm
A downtown Las Vegas protest targeting Immigration and Customs Enforcement tactics turned chaotic Wednesday night when Metro officers deployed tear gas and declared the gathering an unlawful assembly near South Las Vegas Boulevard and Clark Avenue. What began as a march and demonstration by hundreds, complete with American and Mexican flags and chants, escalated around 9:30 p.m. when police determined some participants engaged in illegal behavior. Left-leaning attendees such as 19‑year‑old Serenity Vasquez called it a heartfelt show of solidarity. Others, like organizer Stephanie Gentry, called the action a stand against what they termed “human rights violations.” But when peaceful assembly crossed into unlawful activity, law enforcement acted swiftly to restore order. Urban security demands strength and resolve; preserving liberty means enforcing the rule of law, especially when protests threaten public safety. The real question now: how do we balance respectful dissent with the constitutional duty to maintain order?
