Las Vegas, NV – While low-altitude helicopter flights over the Las Vegas Strip normally raise eyebrows, this Friday and Sunday, they’re part of a crucial safety measure for the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebrations. The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) will be conducting aerial radiation surveys, ensuring a secure and joyous countdown to 2024.
Don’t be alarmed by the buzzing bird!
The public is advised not to be startled by a helicopter methodically tracing a grid pattern as low as 150 feet above the iconic landmarks of the Strip. This seemingly out-of-place sight serves a vital purpose – measuring background radiation levels.
Safeguarding the Celebration:
By gathering this data, the NNSA can effectively monitor and detect any potential radiation spikes during the festivities. These annual surveys are a well-established part of pre-New Year’s Eve security protocols in Las Vegas.
Eyes in the Sky:
A twin-engine Bell 412 helicopter will take to the skies during daylight hours on Friday, December 29th, and Sunday, December 31st. Each survey is expected to take approximately two hours per area, with the helicopter cruising at around 80 mph.
Transparency and Calm:
The NNSA, a branch of the U.S. Department of Energy, prioritizes transparency and public assurance. By informing the community about these low-flying surveys, they aim to avoid any unnecessary alarm or concern.
So, Las Vegas, rest assured that as you prepare for the dazzling confetti showers and electrifying fireworks, the NNSA is diligently working behind the scenes to ensure a safe and joyous celebration under the watchful eyes of their aerial surveys. Let’s raise a toast to a secure and prosperous New Year!
