Las Vegas, NV – Newly released details paint a clearer picture of the dramatic standoff that unfolded in Las Vegas last Friday. The suspect, identified as 64-year-old Thurman Lowe, is accused of a series of disturbing actions before ultimately injuring a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department K9 officer.
Initial Call and Escalation
According to an arrest report obtained by 8 News Now, Lowe called 911 claiming he was stabbing himself and threatening to repeat the act if police responded. Officers arrived at the apartment complex on South Las Vegas Boulevard and encountered Lowe yelling obscenities from inside his residence. He ignored all commands to exit the apartment and answer the door.
Fire and Evacuation
Officers observed smoke emanating from Lowe’s door, leading them to believe he had started a fire inside. The building was evacuated, and both fire and SWAT teams were called to the scene. Firefighters attempted to extinguish the flames through the windows of the apartment.
Standoff and K9 Deployment
Lowe eventually emerged from his apartment wielding a knife and disregarded police orders to drop the weapon. He then yelled threats at officers, stating “I’m coming to get you!” Fearing for their lives, officers deployed K9 officer Enzo.
K9 Injured During Apprehension
Enzo successfully apprehended Lowe, but Lowe stabbed the K9 officer eight to nine times. Officers used electronic control devices before a SWAT officer tackled Lowe to the ground, allowing for his arrest.
Medical Treatment and Charges
Both Lowe and K9 Enzo were transported to separate hospitals for treatment. Lowe remains hospitalized but is in stable condition. Thankfully, K9 Enzo is recovering well and has been reunited with his handler.
Out-of-State Warrant
Further investigation revealed that Lowe is wanted on a warrant issued in St. Louis, Missouri, for allegedly shooting and killing a man before setting fire to the victim’s residence.
Lowe faces a multitude of charges stemming from Friday’s incident, including:
- Arson, 1st degree
- Assault on a protected person with a deadly weapon (2 counts)
- Resisting a public officer with a deadly weapon (not a firearm)
- Torture/injure/poison/attempt to kill a police animal
- Arrest of a fugitive from another state on warrant
Lowe’s next court appearance is scheduled for April 4th.
