West Nile Virus Cases Surge in Clark County, Health District Issues Alert

By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, August 1, 2024 9:32 am

The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) has released an updated report on West Nile Virus (WNV) cases in Clark County, revealing a concerning increase in infections. As of July 29, 2024, 20 cases have been confirmed, a significant rise from the previously reported figures.

Of the 20 confirmed cases, nine were classified as non-neuroinvasive, indicating a milder form of the disease. However, the remaining 11 cases were invasive, signifying a more severe infection that can affect the nervous system.

The geographical distribution of the virus activity, as illustrated in the Health District’s graphic, shows a concentration in the western and northwestern parts of Las Vegas. This highlights the need for targeted prevention efforts in these areas.

To combat the spread of WNV, the SNHD is urging residents to participate in their “Fight the Bite” campaign. This initiative focuses on two key strategies:

  1. Eliminate Standing Water: Residents are encouraged to remove any potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes around their homes. This includes emptying containers that collect water, such as children’s toys, plant saucers, and even bottle caps.

  2. Prevent Mosquito Bites: The use of EPA-registered insect repellent is recommended, along with wearing loose-fitting, long-sleeved clothing when outdoors.

Additionally, the Health District is requesting the public’s assistance in reporting mosquito activity. Residents can call the surveillance program at (702) 759-1633 to report sightings. Green pools, which can serve as significant breeding sites, should be reported to local code enforcement agencies.

The recent surge in WNV cases underscores the importance of vigilance and proactive measures to protect against mosquito bites. By working together to eliminate breeding grounds and prevent bites, the community can help curb the spread of this potentially dangerous virus.
