Winter Storm Sweeps U.S. but Brings Limited Impacts to Las Vegas

A major winter storm impacting large portions of the United States is not expected to bring severe conditions to Las Vegas, though residents should prepare for gusty winds, cooler temperatures, and the possibility of light rain.
According to local meteorologists, the high-impact winter storm stretching from New Mexico through the Great Plains and into the eastern United States will keep its most dangerous effects well east of Southern Nevada. In the Las Vegas Valley, impacts are expected to remain relatively mild.
Forecasters say Southern Nevada could see scattered light rain through Friday and Saturday, with precipitation amounts remaining minimal. Any measurable rainfall is expected to total only a few hundredths of an inch. Snow is possible in the Spring Mountains at elevations above 7,500 feet, but accumulations are expected to be light and confined to higher terrain.
The most noticeable local impact will be wind. Gusty northerly winds are forecast to develop Saturday afternoon, with speeds between 20 and 30 miles per hour and stronger gusts possible in mountain areas and along the Colorado River Valley. Highs in Las Vegas are expected to range from the low 60s to upper 50s through the weekend.
Weather officials also note that while Las Vegas will avoid major storm damage, travel disruptions nationwide could indirectly affect the region, particularly air travel, as tens of thousands of flights have been canceled across the country due to snow and ice in other states.
Residents are advised to use caution while driving in windy conditions, secure outdoor items, and remain aware of weather changes, especially if traveling to higher elevations or outside Southern Nevada.
