1,500 Families Will Receive Free Thanksgiving Dinners

NEVADA – Putting a Thanksgiving feast on the table this year will set you back a little bit extra money.

“We’re really seeing a lot of people who are coming out, reaching out to Catholic Charities, and saying gosh last year I had no problem creating a wonderful holiday meal for my family, but this year I just can’t make my dollar stretch,” said Marie Baxter, CEO of Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada.

The cost of your Thanksgiving dinner is expected to rise by around 13.5 percent, according to a recent report by IRI.

Donation patron Samantha Carter is in agreement.

Carter remarked that while visiting Catholic Charities throughout the year was helpful, it was more challenging around the holiday season.

Inflation, she claimed, is having a major impact on her family this year.

Gas, groceries, and even auto insurance have all risen this year.

This year, however, due to Catholic Charities and Dolan Auto Group, Carter and her husband were able to pick up a free Thanksgiving lunch. Customers gathered their ingredients at the North Valleys Food Pantry in Golden Valley.

Baxter remarked, “They’ll receive their turkey and their potatoes and their stuffing and you know all the things that you think of in that typical feast when people are coming together to celebrate with their families.”

Families might pick from among more than 1,500 turkeys if they registered in advance. According to Carter, having access to this food will allow her to feed her three sons on Thanksgiving.

According to Carter, “they” are his “number one priority,” and he brings them to Catholic Charities whenever they have a need for anything, including food and school supplies. “It’s good to know that they’re always there for you.”

Catholic Charities has filled its Thanksgiving dinner quota, but they are still accepting applications for its Christmas food baskets.

According to Baxter, “those we’ll do approximately 3,000 of, and that’s a ham with all the fixings for Christmas.”

Holiday monetary and food donations are also being accepted by the organization.
