NEVADA – A deputy from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office was struck by a suspected intoxicated driver early Monday morning.

The deputy was standing outside their patrol car on North Virginia St. with their lights engaged while assisting the Reno Police Department (RPD) on a traffic stop shortly before 1 a.m. on Dec. 26. The patrol vehicle of the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office was parked northbound on the shoulder of North Virginia Street, south of Talus Way. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office car was behind an RPD patrol vehicle.

A truck heading northbound on North Virginia St. struck the RPD police car’s driver’s front side before continuing on and striking a Washoe County Sheriff’s Office deputy and their patrol vehicle.

The truck continued driving away following the accident, prompting a traffic stop.

Following an investigation by Nevada State Police Troopers, it was determined that the driver was under the influence and was arrested and booked into the Washoe County Detention Facility on charges of DUI above the legal limit, resulting in substantial bodily harm, and duties of a driver approaching a traffic incident.

There was no information provided concerning the deputy’s condition.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries and will be monitored for the next twenty-four hours. The deputy’s and suspect’s identities have not been revealed.

The inquiry is being handled by the Nevada State Police.
