RENO, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – The ASL Anywhere app, created by the Nevada Mobile Communication Access Project, allows hearing persons in the same room to converse with deaf people via live interpreters.
Users may connect with an ASL interpreter to assist them in a variety of social scenarios, including ordering at restaurants and conversing with coworkers.
No more hurdles to communication, such as paper and pen or mobile phone typing. Bridget Bonheyo, Vice President of Business Development, Marketing, and Customer Relations at Global Technical Communications, stated,
“It’s important to give that communication, to have that access, and to have deaf people be able to connect. Deaf people have been oppressed. We are a minority group in this world and there’s no doubt about that. We’re not confused about the majority being able to hear, so a lot of hearing people take for granted, what it is that they can hear and the certain things they have access to the Deaf people don’t. So therefore, you know, the access to information, even if it is trivial information is empowering, it’s very important for us to be able to have that access.”
The Nevada Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities provided money for the app, which was developed in collaboration with the Nevada Commission for Persons Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
This is a useful tool for both hearing and deaf people to communicate more freely and clearly.
“The hearing world wants to connect, they want to reach out to Deaf people. And that’s been heard. We want to provide that. This app provides services for everyone to be able to have communication and to be able to come together. It’s been a long time for both communities to have access to this kind of service and to have access to communication for the hearing, and have it led by deaf people is beautiful to see. So, to live in a time where things are changing like that, and we have access to technology is really, it’s just a wonderful thing. I’m impressed with the support from the state of Nevada, that we’re receiving and impressed with ASL anywhere this and this community asked for something, and we were able to answer it. Said Obiama Officer, Executive Director of the Nevada Commission for Persons who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.”
For Nevadans who are eligible for the program, ASL Anywhere is free.
To give 250 people free minutes, the project was granted funding. Initially, applicants are given 20 free minutes, and once those minutes have expired, if they complete a survey, they are then given an extra 20 free minutes. Margarita and Delia, two app users, said:
“ASL Anywhere is effective communication accessible for anyone and anywhere. Imagine yourself taking full charge to receive equally communicate in the same room without the hassle of writing back and forth. I have witnessed equal opportunity for my mama. She was finally able to receive full information immediately through ASL Anywhere Interpreter.”
You can fill out the application to get free interpreting services via ASL ANYWHERE. This app is for Nevada residents only.
