RENO, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – The empty Reno Valley Retirement Center east of UNR is being demolished by developers. Instead of seniors, the facility that will take its place will appeal to new inhabitants – students.
‘Up Campus,’ the developer, has plans for a five-story facility with over 600 student rooms.
According to Tyler Ammermann, development manager, the project will begin in spring 2023 and will be completed in time for the 2025-26 academic year.
Reno city officials hope that the completed facility would meet student housing demands on campus.
“I think from a student housing perspective, we know there’s a need for student housing,” said Angela Fuss, assistant director of development services with the City of Reno.
She said that the project might be a nice addition to the area. The senior community was ordered to close by the state of Nevada in 2020 after many health breaches were discovered. Less than a year later, the structure caught fire, and firefighters were forced to remove two homeless persons who had been squatting inside.
“We have had some code enforcement issues over the years with this property. So, because a student housing developer bought it, from one perspective, that’s a good thing, is that now we have an infill project and something that supports the university,” Fuss said
