The Sparks Police Department (SPD) revealed body cam footage of an armed man who was fatally shot by police officers outside their headquarters last week on Thursday.
According to the inquiry, 36-year-old Jason Thorpe of Sparks fired two shots on the property before being shot and killed by police.
Thorpe, according to the footage, hid outside the police station about 2:30 a.m. on October 18. Over the course of 20 minutes, security camera footage shows Thorpe aiming his rifle towards the police station, workers working in the records division, parking lots, and employee entrances roughly 18 times.
Thorpe is shown on camera hiding and shooting one bullet into the air. Soon later, a Sparks sergeant exiting the building after his shift observed Thorpe, who was armed with a pistol, according to police.
SPD said the subject rejected several verbal demands to drop the firearm, prompting SWAT and Crisis Negotiators to respond on the scene.
According to police, the negotiation lasted more than two hours and fifteen minutes when Thorpe jumped up, shot a round at the station, and raced towards police in front of him while still armed. Officers then fired their firearms, striking Thorpe many times.
Thorpe was declared dead on the spot after the SWAT squad assisted REMSA Tactical Emergency Medical Services (REMSA TEMS).
Thorpe fired two shots with a black 9 millimeter semi-automatic pistol, according to the inquiry. He also parked his vehicle south of the police station in a separate spot and walked to the headquarters.
