Washoe County Inmate Found Unresponsive, Declared Deceased; Investigation Underway

Reno, NV – The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate who was found unresponsive in their cell on Sunday evening. The incident has sparked concerns about the conditions and protocols within the jail.

According to a statement released by the Sheriff’s Office, deputies discovered the inmate unresponsive in their cell at approximately 7:25 PM on December 17th. Deputies immediately initiated life-saving measures and called for assistance from REMSA and the Reno Fire Department. Despite their efforts, medical personnel pronounced the inmate deceased at around 7:50 PM.

The cause and manner of death are currently pending investigation by the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office has also launched its own internal investigation into the incident, aiming to determine any contributing factors and ensure all proper procedures were followed.

The deceased inmate’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of next-of-kin. This tragedy has understandably raised questions and concerns about the safety and well-being of inmates within the Washoe County jail. Advocates for inmates’ rights have called for transparency and a thorough investigation into the incident, emphasizing the need to ensure the safety and humane treatment of all detainees.
