LAS VEGAS, NV — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s (LVMPD) Collision Investigation Section has launched a comprehensive inquiry after a violent, midday head-on collision on East Sunset Road left a local motorist fighting for life in a regional trauma center.
The Crossover Maneuver
According to an official public safety bulletin issued by traffic investigators, the high-impact wreck unfolded along East Sunset Road, just east of South Pine Street.
Evidence collected from the scene, supported by initial witness statements and area video surveillance, indicates that a 29-year-old Las Vegas woman was legally operating a 2010 Honda Accord traveling eastbound in the left travel lane. Concurrently, a 39-year-old female driver in a 2020 GMC Terrain was traveling westbound.
For reasons still under intense review by fatal detail detectives, the GMC Terrain suddenly veered sharply to the left, jumped over the raised physical center median, and began traveling westbound completely against traffic inside the designated eastbound lanes.
High-Speed Impact and Emergency Care
The errant GMC Terrain broadsided the front-left section of the oncoming Honda Accord at an extreme speed. Emergency Medical Services and fire rescue crews quickly swarmed the corridor to extract both operators from the heavily compromised vehicle chassis.
Paramedics rushed both women to the Sunrise Hospital trauma unit. Medical staff confirmed that the 39-year-old driver of the GMC sustained severe, life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition. The driver of the Honda survived the impact with serious but stable injuries.
Investigators are actively reviewing toxicological reports and medical histories to determine if acute substance impairment or a sudden medical episode triggered the sudden crossover.
