LAS VEGAS, NV — The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has released its proposed framework to avert catastrophic water depletion along the Colorado River, outlining significant reduction mandates for Nevada, Arizona, and California.

The federal announcement comes as water levels at Lake Mead and Lake Powell hover near historic lows following prolonged drought conditions across the Southwest.

Managing Lower Basin Diversions

The proposed plan calls for collective water reductions across Lower Basin states reaching up to 3 million acre-feet through 2036, “subject to hydrology”. The strategy aims to preserve operational capacity at Glen Canyon and Hoover Dams to protect regional hydroelectric power generation and municipal drinking water access.
