HORMUZ WHO’S BOSS: Trump Says U.S. Controls World’s Oil Chokepoint as Iran’s Lifeline Gets Strangled

President Donald Trump is declaring victory in the battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with the White House pointing to newly released U.S. military figures showing American forces have cleared Iranian mines, escorted nearly 1,500 commercial vessels and choked off Tehran’s oil exports through one of the most strategically important waterways on Earth.

U.S. Central Command says nearly 750 million barrels of crude have moved through the Strait under American protection, while 75 vessels attempting to breach the U.S. blockade of Iran were turned around. The White House says Iran has exported zero oil from its shores since the blockade resumed in July and Gulf oil exports have recovered to roughly two-thirds of pre-operation levels. 

That is a radically different picture from the one Tehran has been selling.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard insisted Friday that it has “full control” of the Strait and said restrictions would remain until the United States ends military operations against Iran. Trump has repeatedly rejected that claim, arguing that the U.S. Navy controls access to the waterway and decides which ships pass through. Reuters reported this week that Trump said mines had been detonated or removed from international shipping lanes, even as Iranian officials continued contesting Washington’s account. 

The scoreboard is becoming harder for the mullahs to explain.

The White House says Iran’s effort to weaponize the Strait has been blunted while American-protected energy traffic continues moving. Meanwhile, Iran’s economy is buckling under war and renewed sanctions. Reuters reported Saturday that Iranian inflation has surged to 66 percent, foreign trade has fallen sharply and leaders in Tehran are openly acknowledging deepening economic pain. 

Trump spent weeks telling skeptical Democrats and foreign-policy pundits that America, not Iran, controlled Hormuz. “We control the Strait, 100%,” Trump said earlier this month. Subsequent commercial traffic appears to have strengthened his argument, even if Iran continues insisting otherwise. Oil shipments from the Persian Gulf have reportedly rebounded toward 80 percent of prewar levels, helping keep crude prices from exploding despite the continuing conflict. 

For Nevada, this is not some distant naval chess match involving dots on a Pentagon map.

The Strait of Hormuz has been showing up directly on gas-station signs across the Silver State. AAA reported last week that Nevada regular gasoline averaged $4.77 a gallon, including $4.76 in Las Vegas and $5.06 in Reno, with continued instability around Hormuz keeping crude prices elevated. Earlier easing around the Strait had helped Nevada pump prices fall before renewed uncertainty pushed them upward again. 

That makes the political contrast particularly uncomfortable for Nevada Democrats who spent months questioning Trump’s Iran strategy. Dina Titus said the administration had failed to make a compelling case for the war, while Susie Lee and Steven Horsford demanded greater congressional consultation and explanations of Trump’s endgame. 

Those are legitimate constitutional debates. But Trump’s strategic bet was also unmistakable: crush Iran’s ability to threaten global commerce, keep international oil moving and deprive the regime of the petroleum revenue financing its military machine.

Iran tried to turn Hormuz into a hostage note to the world.

Trump sent the Navy.

Now oil is moving, Iranian exports are being squeezed and the regime that spent decades threatening to close the world’s most important energy chokepoint is arguing over who actually controls it.

For once, Tehran may not like the answer.
