The October 2022 Ambush on Flamingo Road

The lethal encounter unfolded in the early morning hours of October 13, 2022, when Officer Truong Thai, 49, and Officer Ryan Gillihan were dispatched to investigate a street-side domestic dispute near East Flamingo Road and University Center Drive, several blocks east of the Las Vegas Strip.

Upon arrival, the two officers contacted Hampton, who was seated inside his vehicle.

When officers attempted to de-escalate the confrontation, Hampton refused commands, pulled an AK-style high-powered pistol, and opened fire directly through the vehicle window at the officers and his family members.

Officer Thai was struck in the torso, suffering catastrophic internal injuries. Officer Gillihan and Hampton’s wife escaped physical harm as Gillihan returned fire, while Hampton’s mother-in-law sustained a non-fatal gunshot wound to the leg.

Hampton fled the scene in his vehicle but was pursued by responding backup cruisers and taken into custody after a brief standoff nearby.

Paramedics rushed Officer Thai to the University Medical Center (UMC) Trauma Center, where he succumbed to his wounds. Thai was a revered 23-year veteran of Metro who served as a dedicated patrolman, mentor, and firearms instructor.

Plea Deal Avoids Death Penalty

The Clark County District Attorney’s Office initially filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty against Hampton.

However, following years of psychiatric examinations and competency hearings, prosecutors and defense counsel reached a negotiated plea agreement in May. Under the terms of the settlement, the state withdrew its death notice in exchange for Hampton’s plea of guilty but mentally ill to first-degree murder and associated charges, ensuring he would spend the majority of his remaining life incarcerated.
