NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV — Marking a major expansion of emergency medical training and tactical firefighting capabilities across Southern Nevada, the City of North Las Vegas formally dedicated its brand-new regional fire training center on Tuesday afternoon.
The facility—situated at 1590 W. Brooks Avenue near Martin Luther King Boulevard—was officially opened during a ribbon-cutting and equipment demonstration ceremony led by Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown, Mayor Pro Tem Scott Black, City Manager Micaela Moore, and Fire Chief Joseph Calhoun.
The state-of-the-art campus stands as the only fire department training facility in Southern Nevada to feature a fully integrated ambulance simulator that meticulously replicates the operational cabin of an active municipal rescue unit.
The dedication comes days before the complex welcomes its inaugural recruit class on Monday, October 19, when 13 new fire recruits will begin a multi-month academy syllabus.

High-Fidelity Medical Simulation in Confined Rescue Cabins
While traditional fire academies focus heavily on hose evolutions, ladder placement, and structural search, modern urban fire departments face an operational reality where medical responses account for upwards of 80% of daily service calls.
The centerpiece of the Brooks Avenue facility is its custom ambulance simulator.
Engineered to the exact physical dimensions and interior ergonomics of a frontline NLVFD rescue unit, the simulator provides recruit firefighters and veteran paramedics with a hyper-realistic environment to practice high-stress life-support interventions.
Inside the simulator, trainees will navigate tight spatial constraints while administering cardiac monitoring, intravenous lines, advanced airway intubation, and pediatric trauma management—all while instructors manipulate computerized vitals and simulate vehicle motion stressors from adjacent control stations.
“When our crews respond to a critical trauma or cardiac arrest on the streets, the back of a moving ambulance offers zero room for hesitation or error,” Chief Joseph Calhoun underscored during live equipment demonstrations. “Having the only training center in Southern Nevada with this level of ambulance simulation technology allows us to drill high-consequence paramedic medicine right here at home, guaranteeing our residents receive unmatched clinical care from day one.”
Phased Campus Buildout and Regional Fire Academy Synergies
Tuesday’s ribbon cutting represents Phase 1 of an overarching public safety capital initiative designed to keep pace with North Las Vegas’s booming industrial and residential development across Apex and the northern 215 Beltway corridor.

City leaders confirmed that ground will break later this winter on a four-story tactical burn tower, scheduled for delivery in early 2027.
The burn tower will feature natural gas and Class-A prop burn rooms, multi-story exterior stair towers, standpipe connections, and breachable ventilation roofs to simulate mid-rise commercial and residential fires.
Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown noted that investing in municipal training infrastructure directly reduces reliance on outside regional facilities while speeding up the commissioning pipeline for frontline personnel.
Thirteen recruits will take their seats inside the new classrooms on October 19, beginning the intensive physical and medical regimen necessary to earn their badges with the North Las Vegas Fire Department.
