LAS VEGAS, NV — Clark County Fire Department crews launched an aggressive interior attack early Saturday morning to extinguish a burning battery that ignited inside a residential home directly across the street from an elementary school campus.
Emergency dispatchers were alerted shortly after 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2026, receiving calls reporting a battery on fire inside a single-family residence located at 5344 Hillsboro Lane.
The residential street sits in an established neighborhood directly opposite Harley A. Harmon Elementary School, near the intersection of East Harmon Avenue and South Nellis Boulevard in the eastern Las Vegas Valley.
First-arriving fire apparatus arrived within minutes to discover heavy smoke billowing from the front entrance and eaves of the single-story home.
Engine crews deployed attack hose lines and pushed directly into the structure, locating the burning battery pack and halting flame spread to the remainder of the living quarters.
Firefighters confirmed during primary search sweeps that all residents had evacuated the structure safely.
One individual was located outside the residence and received on-site medical evaluation and treatment from responding paramedics.

Rapid Knockdown Halts Interior Spread
Battery blazes—particularly those involving lithium-ion cells found in tools, mobility scooters, or electronic devices—pose distinct firefighting challenges due to rapid thermal acceleration, hazardous gas releases, and risk of re-ignition.
Crews utilized continuous water cooling to lower thermal runaway temperatures within the battery casing before safely removing the charred cells from the home.
Ventilation teams set up high-powered blowers to purge thick, toxic smoke and carbon monoxide from the attic space and bedrooms, minimizing structural degradation.
Because the emergency unfolded before dawn during a weekend, Harley A. Harmon Elementary School was closed and unoccupied, with fire personnel confirming the school property sustained zero collateral smoke or fire damage.
Fire Safety Guidelines for Battery Devices
Fire prevention officials continue to remind Southern Nevada residents to practice caution when charging and maintaining high-capacity battery units:

RESIDENTIAL BATTERY SAFETY PROTOCOLS
+--------------------------------------------------------+
• Surface Placement: Always charge devices on hard,
flat, non-combustible surfaces (desks, tile, bare
floors) rather than beds, couches, or carpets
• OEM Charging Equipment: Use only manufacturer-
approved adapters; avoid uncertified fast chargers
• Thermal Warnings: Immediately unplug and isolate
batteries that swell, emit unusual odors, or hiss

Investigators with the Clark County Fire Department Fire Prevention Bureau are conducting forensic evaluations to pinpoint the exact battery type, brand, and electrical failure mechanism that triggered the early morning ignition.
