LAS VEGAS, Nev. (702 Times, NV Globe) – On Wednesday, a judge approved Clark County’s petition to remove the public official accused of murdering a Las Vegas journalist from office.
Judge David Jones heard arguments from the District Counsel’s office and an attorney for Robert Telles on whether Clark County has grounds to remove Telles from his position as public administrator.
Telles is being detained without bond at the Clark County Detention Center on an open murder charge stemming from his arrest in the killing of Las Vegas Review-Journal writer Jeff German. The hearing on Wednesday was initially planned for September 28 but was moved to give Telles’ attorney, Travis Shetler, additional time to react.
Authorities claim that Telles’ DNA was discovered on German’s body during an autopsy and that evidence linking him to the murder was discovered at his residence.
Prosecutors alleged German’s reporting on conflict in the public administrator’s office contributed to his defeat in the Democratic primary election in June.
Telles was removed from office by the county last month, claiming that his continued imprisonment renders him incapable of executing his duties. Travis Shetler, Telles’s attorney, submitted a petition to dismiss on Tuesday night and stated at Wednesday’s hearing that Telles had done his best while in jail.
Following Judge Jones’ judgment, a county official issued the following statement:
“Clark County two weeks ago filed to remove Robert Telles from office as the elected Public Administrator. In the County’s filing, Clark County asserted that following the charge of open murder in the death of Jeff German, Robert Telles was unable to fulfill his job responsibilities and was neglectful of office. Today, a judge agreed and removed Telles from elected office. The County will now move forward in appointing someone to fulfill the end of Telles’ term which expires on January 1, 2023, when the new Public Administrator elected this November takes office.”
This is a developing narrative.
