dRENO, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe)- As Halloween draws to a close, one Reno animal sanctuary is requesting that you save some of your leftover pumpkin donations.
The Om Home Sanctuary offers a therapeutic environment for both humans and animals. Until recently, owner Billie Jo Stokes funded the shelter on her own. But now that she’s a fully recognized charity, she needs the aid of the community.
“If you know me you know I’ll take just about anybody or anything. It’s kind of my specialty. So the more help I can get the more I’ll take in,” Stokes explains.
What began with one donkey and a young mustang has evolved into a 70-acre farm with 99 animals. Stokes tragically lost her son in 2009, and it was during this time that she met her first rescue donkey. She claims that he needed a mother and that she needed to be needed.
Stokes wanted to continue extending her heart to animals that could no longer be cared for by their existing owners or who had been abandoned or harmed. They allowed her to handle her anguish, agony, and sadness in a way that no human could. She understood that this form of treatment may help a lot of other moms who had lost their children. The rescuers began to arrive as a result of word of mouth.
“I say that I’m not healed, this is going to be a lifelong ache in my heart. But I’ll tell you one thing, they sure make it better and we’re so grateful together,” Stokes added.
Billie Jo does not refer to this as only an animal sanctuary since she intends to make the site available to special needs groups, schools, and other like-minded organizations.
