Judge Robert Telles, who is suspected of murdering investigative reporter Jeff German of the Las Vegas Review-Journal during the Labor Day weekend, was given a trial date.

Ryan Helmick, Telles’ attorney, told the judge that he thought Telles would be prepared for a trial in April but otherwise chose to remain silent.

Late this month, Telles engaged private criminal defense lawyer Helmick to represent him after first being given a public defender.

Telles is charged with waiting outside German’s house, age 69, “lying in wait.” Over the Labor Day holiday, German was fatally stabbed. German’s fingernails were revealed to contain Telles’ DNA, according to the arrest report.

According to the prosecution, Telles was angry with German because German allegedly published information about issues at the public administrator’s office that he thought contributed to his loss in the primary election.
