North Las Vegas Implements AI-Powered Translation Software to Enhance Civic Engagement in Public Meetings

LAS VEGAS – The City of North Las Vegas is set to launch an artificial intelligence-powered translation software called Wordly on August 2 at 4 p.m. during the City Council and Redevelopment Agency meeting. This innovative tool aims to enable constituents to interact in real-time with city officials, including the Mayor and City Council, during public meetings.

Wordly, the AI-powered translation tool, works by instantly capturing a speaker’s comments and sending the translation to meeting participants’ mobile devices via text or audio. Notably, no app download or special equipment is required, making it easily accessible for all attendees. The city will initially introduce Spanish translation, catering to the significant Hispanic community that makes up 42% of North Las Vegas residents. However, Wordly is equipped to interpret over 30 languages, ensuring a wide range of constituents can engage effectively with the local government.

Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown emphasized the importance of inclusivity in a culturally diverse community, stating that every resident should feel heard regardless of the language they speak. By becoming the first jurisdiction in Nevada to implement real-time, AI-powered translation services, North Las Vegas aims to empower its constituents to actively participate in City Council meetings and share their ideas directly with city officials.

Councilman Isaac Barron, who understands the need for greater connectivity with Spanish-speaking residents, expressed excitement over the technology’s potential to foster greater civic engagement and participation. The use of Wordly is designed to make it easier for attendees to connect with government officials, allowing them to scan a QR code on the meeting agenda and select Spanish from the drop-down menu. For those who prefer to listen rather than read the translation, bringing a headset is an option.

The City of North Las Vegas hopes that this innovative technology will build bridges in the community and further enhance civic participation, ultimately creating a more inclusive and accessible environment for all residents.
