Nevada National Guard Activated as Hurricane Hilary Approaches Coastline

LAS VEGAS – Governor Joe Lombardo has announced the activation of the Nevada National Guard in preparation for the impending arrival of Hurricane Hilary along the western coast of the United States. With heavy winds and rains expected to cause flooding across southern counties in the state, 100 National Guard troops are being mobilized to assist in emergency response efforts.

In a statement released Friday night, Governor Lombardo urged all Nevadans to take necessary precautions ahead of the storm. He emphasized the importance of preparedness, stating that having a plan in place can help ensure the safety of families and loved ones during Hurricane Hilary’s impact.

Ongoing communication and collaboration between various emergency response agencies, including the Nevada Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, the National Weather Service, and others, are in progress to ensure a coordinated response.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for most of Nevada from Saturday, August 19 at 11 a.m. to Tuesday, August 22 at 5 a.m., indicating the potential for significant flooding.

To assist residents in their preparedness efforts, the Office of the Governor has provided emergency guidance:

1. Tailor your plans and supplies to your specific daily living needs.
2. Coordinate with your network for assistance in communication, childcare, medical needs, and more.
3. Ensure everyone in your household is aware of and understands your plan.
4. Identify additional help required for seniors or those with disabilities.
5. Stay informed through various alert systems and mobile apps.
6. Secure emergency charging options for phones and devices.
7. Prepare your home by clearing drains, gutters, and securing outdoor furniture.
8. Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes and practice with household members and pets.
9. Keep copies of important documents in a secure digital space.
10. Have ample supplies, including medications, disinfectants, masks, and pet essentials.
11. Replenish your emergency kit regularly and replace expired items.
12. Visit dem.nv.gov for more flood-related information and guidance.
