Dayton, NV – On Thursday afternoon, at 4:19 p.m., the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) Patrol Deputies swiftly responded to a distressing report of shots fired and a man armed with a rifle seen fleeing from an apartment in the Sweetwater Circle area of Dayton, NV.

Witnesses on the scene reported that the suspect had taken refuge inside a garage of one of the nearby apartments. As deputies arrived, the situation escalated as the man barricaded himself within the garage and refused to exit, even when called upon by law enforcement.

In response to the potentially dangerous situation, deputies established a perimeter around the apartment, and additional units were summoned to assist in the operation.

As a precaution, LCSO issued a shelter-in-place advisory near Dayton Village Parkway around 5 p.m., resulting in the closure of Dayton Village Parkway, Sweetwater Circle, and Nightingale to ensure public safety.

During the course of their response, investigators conducted interviews with witnesses who disclosed that the armed suspect had discharged his firearm within the apartment.

Despite hours of negotiation and de-escalation attempts, the standoff persisted. Ultimately, the LCSO SWAT team made a tactical entry into the garage, where they discovered the suspect armed with a handgun, unresponsive in a car.

Prompt life-saving measures, including the administration of Narcan, were initiated. Central Lyon County Fire Department Paramedics subsequently took over these efforts, successfully reviving the suspect, who was then transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

A subsequent search of the apartment where the suspect was found yielded multiple firearms, including an AR-15 style rifle, a shotgun, and a handgun. Additionally, drug paraphernalia was discovered within the premises.

The apprehended suspect has been identified as 34-year-old Dayton resident Cody Ward. Upon his release from the hospital, Ward will be booked into the Lyon County Jail, facing a litany of charges, including:

– Discharging a Firearm in an Occupied Dwelling (Felony)
– Ex-Felon in Possession of a Firearm (Felony) – Three counts
– Obstructing and Delaying a Peace Officer (Misdemeanor)
– Brandishing a Firearm (Misdemeanor)
– Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (Misdemeanor)

As of now, Ward’s bail has been set at $68,387.

The successful resolution of this high-stress situation was made possible by the collective efforts of the Sheriff’s Office Crisis Negotiators, LCSO Dayton Patrol deputies, and other law enforcement personnel. Officers cleared the scene around 9 p.m., bringing relief to the community and ensuring their safety.
