UNLV Men’s Swimming’s Bryson Huey and McKay Mickelson Conclude 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials at Lucas Oil Stadium

UNLV swimmers Bryson Huey and McKay Mickelson wrapped up their participation in the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials on Thursday at Lucas Oil Stadium, leaving a notable mark with personal bests and impressive performances.

Originally from Walnut Creek, California, Huey delivered a standout performance in the 50-meter freestyle preliminaries. Competing in heat No. 8, Huey secured a win and placed 23rd overall out of 82 swimmers. He clocked in with a personal best time of 22.39 seconds, edging out his entry time of 22.42 seconds by three-hundredths of a second. Huey entered the trials ranked 25th in his event, making his improvement particularly significant.

Meanwhile, Las Vegas native McKay Mickelson, a product of Legacy High School, competed in the 200-meter backstroke preliminaries on Wednesday. Mickelson finished 48th out of 63 competitors with a time of 2:02.22. Despite not besting his entry time of 2:01.49, Mickelson’s performance was commendable given his entry rank of 68th, adjusted prior to scratches.

Both swimmers have been pivotal to UNLV’s recent successes. This spring, Huey and Mickelson were instrumental in leading the Rebels to their fourth consecutive Western Athletic Conference (WAC) title, setting a conference meet points record of 972 points. Their achievements at the Olympic Trials further solidify their status as top-tier athletes in collegiate swimming.

The conclusion of the Olympic Trials marks a significant milestone in their swimming careers, showcasing their growth and potential on a national stage. As they return to UNLV, both swimmers will undoubtedly continue to be key contributors to the Rebels’ swimming program.
