LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – A Las Vegas woman, Patricia Sierra, 47, has been arrested and charged with burglary, grand larceny, and disturbing human remains after allegedly stealing a casket containing the body of Maria Ramirez from a local funeral home.
The incident occurred on August 27th at Affordable Cremation & Burial Service, located at 2127 W. Charleston Blvd. According to the Metropolitan Police Department (Metro), Sierra broke into the funeral home and removed Ramirez’s body, which had been prepared for a viewing scheduled for the day before.
The grisly discovery was made by a passerby, Marcus Kelly, who noticed the casket abandoned in the street. Upon investigating, Kelly found Ramirez’s body lying in the landscaping near the funeral home’s front walkway.
Surveillance footage revealed Sierra breaking into the funeral home and removing the casket. She was later apprehended on August 29th after being identified by a witness at a 7-Eleven.
Sierra admitted to having a substance abuse problem and claimed she was under the influence during the incident. However, she expressed remorse for her actions and apologized to the victim’s family.
The funeral home has declined to comment on the matter.
