Nevada’s Domestic Violence Crisis: Time to Confront the Uncomfortable Truth
By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, February 11, 2025 10:49 am
Nevada is facing an escalating crisis that demands more than just fleeting headlines—the state’s domestic violence rates are among the highest in the nation. With nearly half of Nevada’s women affected, this isn’t just a statistic; it’s a call to action.
In recent months, heartbreaking cases have gripped the state. Renise Wolfe, just 33 years old, was allegedly shot in the head by her boyfriend. A month later, police discovered Selene Perez’s body hidden in her boyfriend’s car. These aren’t isolated incidents—they’re a grim reflection of a systemic issue that too often flies under the radar.
Liz Ortenburger, CEO of SafeNest, Nevada’s leading domestic abuse treatment center, underscores the severity: “We’re the second highest rate of domestic violence with 43.5% of women being affected in our community. My staff responds to about 25 to 30 domestic violence 911 calls with Metro Police each week.”
But why are these numbers soaring? Economic stress, societal polarization, and a disturbing tolerance for violence within relationships all play a role. Dr. Sid Khurana from Nevada Mental Health adds, “It’s the intergenerational trauma. Kids exposed to domestic violence often become the next generation of abusers or victims.”
Even more concerning is the underreporting. Fear of legal repercussions, especially among undocumented women, silences countless victims. This chilling reality points to a system where the vulnerable are left to fend for themselves.
SafeNest is working tirelessly, with plans to expand through a new campus, One Safe Place, which aims to provide comprehensive resources and medical care for survivors. But government support is just one piece of the puzzle. Real change demands a cultural shift—a recognition that personal responsibility and community vigilance are paramount.
Domestic violence isn’t a private issue; it’s a societal epidemic. The question is, will Nevada continue to tolerate it, or will we demand accountability from both perpetrators and the system meant to protect the vulnerable?
