Left Turn Lethal: 80-Year-Old’s Fatal Mistake Highlights Rising Traffic Deaths in Las Vegas

By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, April 10, 2025 6:54 pm

An 80-year-old man tragically lost his life following a traffic collision at the intersection of Desert Inn Road and Arville Street in Las Vegas. The incident occurred around 8:55 p.m. on Sunday when the elderly driver, operating a 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, attempted a left turn under a flashing yellow arrow and failed to yield to oncoming traffic. His vehicle collided with a 2019 Nissan Rogue driven by a 51-year-old woman who had the right of way.

The man was transported to UMC Trauma Center but succumbed to his injuries days later. The female driver sustained minor injuries and showed no signs of impairment. This incident marks the 52nd traffic-related fatality within the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction in 2025, underscoring a concerning trend in roadway deaths.

As traffic fatalities continue to rise, it becomes imperative to address the factors contributing to these preventable incidents. While infrastructure and enforcement play roles, individual accountability remains paramount. Drivers must exercise caution, especially when navigating intersections and yielding appropriately. The community must also advocate for comprehensive driver education programs that emphasize the consequences of negligent driving behaviors.

The loss of life on our roads is not merely a statistic but a call to action for all stakeholders to prioritize safety and responsibility behind the wheel.
