OPINION: Washoe County Schools: NOT Fixable…
but that’s a good thing.
By Paul White, June 23, 2025 3:00 am
Good News:
Community concern is growing about Washoe County’s failed schools. Numerous organizations are finally getting serious about the need to fix this situation.
Bad News:
It’s too late.
Parents and county residents have waited too long. They’ve been indifferent to years of warnings and warning signs. The result? WCSD has accumulated an insurmountable mountain of unfixable problems in every area of school operation.
• Any major school problem that was challenged by concerned citizens would result in strong pushback from employees and community organizations who benefit from allowing the troubled situations to continue.
• Ultra-Leftist school leaders and their destructive policies are firmly entrenched in WCSD. Fighting just ONE issue successfully could take not only years, but large legal fees as well. The District flagrantly violates the law because they have no fear of lawsuits. They pay their lawyers with our tax dollars.
Stop Wasting Your Time.
WCSD’s 100+ Public Schools Are NOT Fixable.
Here are just 11 of the numerous WCSD situations that would have to be corrected before there was any hope of having, safe, respectful, financially secure, and academically high-achieving schools.
1) WCSD’s Acceptance of Extreme Non-Attendance, Daily Drug/Alcohol Abuse, and Violent Behavior.
NRS law provides strong punishments for all 3 problems. WCSD denies the problems and refuses to enforce the laws.
2) Academic Standards are Low – The Majority of Diplomas are Worthless.
The statistics say it all.
• 82% of all WCSD 12th graders receive diplomas.
• 50% – 70% of these graduates test at a functionally illiterate level.
3) WCSD School Police Cover-ups.
The school cops have an established record of keeping the public uninformed, by cover-ups and outright lying about criminal activities on school campuses.
4) Labor Relations Department.
Similar in principle to the School Police, Labor Relations specializes in squashing dissent within the ranks by intimidating employees who threaten to publicly complain about administrative malfeasance.
5) School Board Trustees.
These individuals are the main reason the community has no idea how bad our schools are.
• The Board ensures minimal public opportunity for community feedback by holding meetings in illegally small venues, and at inconvenient times.
• They maintain policies that threaten the employment of any WCSD employee who speaks publicly about wrong-doing at their schools.
• The Board prevents public awareness of dysfunctional school environments by allowing NO unannounced visits. Parents and the media are offered only phony, orchestrated presentations.
6) WCSD Superintendent
WCSD’s superintendent does the most damage to the District by simply doing nothing.
Wanting to maintain his subordinates’ support, the Superintendent allows WCSD’s 30-50% of administrative bloat to continue unchallenged. These unnecessary employees and departments accomplish almost nothing, while spending millions of dollars that don’t benefit a single child.
7) Public Information Office
This department has one primary job: lying-on-demand to the media and community about any issue that could expose WCSD in its true light.
8) A Career-long Commitment to “CYA” by 3,800 Teachers, Hundreds of Principals, and Numerous Support Staff.
• ANY of these men and women could provide enough information about school wrong-doing to bring down the entire system.
• But ALL of them place top priority on not losing their jobs.
• So, NONE of them are willing to speak out publicly against the damage being done to the students, and our schools continue to fail.
9) Embedded Racial Favoritism
It doesn’t matter if the issue is student discipline or staff hiring/firing/promoting. WCSD’s implementation of DEI is alive and well. Any race or culture is consistently favored over White, straight males.
10) Chronic Budget Deficits
This will be a forever-issue:
• Until minimally, 30% of non-teaching administrators are removed. NO one would even know they were gone. The overlap and number of needless positions is absurd; and tens of millions of dollars would be saved annually.
• Until privatizing non-instructional positions is implemented on a large scale. A growing number of school districts who privatize non-instructional positions typically save 20-30%. They get more-for-less from their sub-contracted employees, and avoid obligations for hundreds of life-long pensions and healthcare benefits.
11) Moral Brokenness, Due to Staff Silence and/or Disregard for Traditional Biblical Values.
WCSD schools are far more godless than most people realize.
Lewd library books, hyper-sexualized sex education curriculum, obsessive indoctrination of students regarding aberrant sexual practices, etc., are merely the effect of teachers and principals who either:
• Have no belief in traditional biblical values themselves, OR …
• Personally subscribe to those values but are unwilling to stand up for them in school.
Either way, WCSD schools have thrown out the shared moral/spiritual values that have held our nation together since its inception.
The negative influence these educators have on students cannot be overestimated. Each teacher spends almost 1,300 hours each year, directly and indirectly promoting their beliefs to the children entrusted to them.
CAN WCSD’s Schools Be Fixed?
Not a chance.
Fixing WCSD’s schools would not only require changing ALL of the impossible issues listed above, but many others as well.
That’s not going to happen for a variety of reasons … but that’`s a good thing.
We’ve settled for inferior public schools for too long – not just in Washoe County but throughout Nevada and our entire nation.
Washoe County’s public schools are a near total failure because they’ve been a monopoly for too long.
Not having to compete for students has taken away any motivation the schools might have had to be: safe, clean, respectful, academically objective and effective, free from drugs and violence, and more.
No matter how incompetent and morally challenged WCSD’s leadership is –
No matter how little their students learn –
WCSD’s staff members stay employed, receive annual raises – and do pretty much what they please.
That’s why concerned residents need to fight for the ONLY solution that will provide high-quality educational opportunities for all our children:
Full-amount Vouchers for ALL Parents
• No government interference
• No-strings-attached
NOTHING LESS..
No matter what anyone claims, this has not been done anywhere – ever, and certainly not in Nevada.
WITH Universal Full Vouchers, a completely wide-open, free-market competition for K-12 education could begin!
A whirlwind of privately operated, innovative schooling ideas and high-quality learning options would appear almost overnight.
Competition for students would be fierce and the resulting education choices would be fantastic.
This is the only “school fix” you want to spend even one minute fighting for, because it’s the only one that will make a difference.
You’ve been fooled badly and intentionally, by government talk of things like “school choice”, “charter schools”, “dual enrollment” programs, “Education Savings Accounts,” etc.
NONE of these arranging-the-deck-chairs-on-the-Titanic-type solutions have the ability to make any significant change in the situations I described, because NONE of them take away any significant money and dictatorial power from the public school district.
WITHOUT Full Vouchers –
WITHOUT giving every parent the financial opportunity to separate themselves completely from our UNfixable WCSD schools, the dystopian disaster we’re currently seeing in our school district will be looked back on fondly as “the good ol’ days.”
