Nevada Democrats Vote No on Tax Relief, Then Try to Take Credit

By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, September 9, 2025 11:27 am

You really can’t make this up. Nevada Democrats Steven Horsford, Susie Lee, and Dina Titus are trying to take a victory lap on the “No Tax on Tips” provision in the One Big Beautiful Bill – even though they all voted against it.

That’s right. They opposed the bill, lost the vote, and now they’re acting like they delivered a win for Nevada’s hardworking hospitality workers.

All three of them even sent a letter to Treasury demanding clarity on how the “No Tax on Tips” policy should be implemented. Horsford then jumped on Twitter to brag:

“The Trump admin listened to @repdinatitus, @RepSusieLee & me – we demanded clarity on who qualifies for ‘No Tax on Tips.’ Workers deserve answers, and now they have them.”

The gall. The hypocrisy. The shamelessness. Here’s the kicker: in that same letter, Horsford, Lee, and Titus admitted that leaving out industries like hospitality, food and beverage service, and custodial work “will directly undermine the deduction’s intended goal of providing relief to working-class Americans.”

Exactly right. But let’s not forget – they voted against giving that relief in the first place.

This isn’t a new move. Susie Lee’s already been busted for the same stunt. She tried to take credit for a defense provision tucked into the One Big Beautiful Bill while conveniently ignoring the fact she voted against it.

Lee and her colleagues are running the same playbook here: vote no, lose, and then spin it like you were the hero all along. Nevada voters aren’t dumb. They can see through it. Dina Titus herself told Punchbowl News that explaining their position is “a challenge.” Her words:

“Yeah, we want no tax on tips, but we don’t want it capped. Or yeah, we want no tax on tips, but we don’t want it sunsetting… that’s always harder. They say in politics, if you’re explaining, you’re backing up.”

Exactly. If you’re explaining, you’re losing. And right now, Democrats are doing a lot of explaining.

Republicans aren’t letting this slide. NRCC spokesman Christian Martinez nailed it: “Out of touch Democrats Steven Horsford, Dina Titus, and Susie Lee are the political equivalent of arsonists taking credit for calling the fire department. They voted against tax relief for Nevada’s workers, and now they’re shamelessly pretending to be its champions. It’s a tired pattern of hypocrisy: oppose the bill, lose, and then try to steal credit for its wins. Nevadans deserve better than frauds who vote no and brag yes.”

Nevada’s tipped workers deserved this tax break. They got it despite Horsford, Lee, and Titus, not because of them. And no amount of tweeting, spinning, or explaining is going to change that.
