AMERICA’S ATTIC, NOT A MARXIST BASEMENT: Trump Moves to Purge Woke Propaganda From Smithsonian

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday directing federal officials to confront what the White House describes as the ideological capture of the Smithsonian Institution and restore honesty, gratitude and national pride to the telling of America’s history.

The order follows a months-long Domestic Policy Council investigation into the Smithsonian and its National Museum of American History. The resulting report concluded that Smithsonian leaders had abandoned their responsibility to preserve America’s shared inheritance and instead turned history into a weapon for advancing social justice activism and radical political transformation.

Trump’s order directs the Interior Department, Office of Management and Budget, General Services Administration and White House Domestic Policy Council to use every available authority to correct the problems identified in the report. That includes enforcing existing laws, funding requirements and federal contract conditions.

The president also ordered temporary signage outside the National Museum of American History warning visitors about the institution’s ideological capture and directing them toward accurate historical information. Additional exhibits or signs will correct misleading material and honor the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence during America’s 250th anniversary year.

It is a remarkable humiliation for an institution entrusted with preserving the nation’s most precious artifacts. The museum that houses the Star-Spangled Banner apparently needs a warning label because its leadership can no longer be trusted to tell visitors why the country flying that flag is worth celebrating.

The Smithsonian receives more than $1 billion from American taxpayers every year. Those taxpayers believed they were funding museums, scholarship and the preservation of national treasures. Instead, according to the White House report, they financed an ideological reeducation project that treated American history as evidence for the prosecution.

This is what happens when the faculty-lounge left captures a cultural institution. Exhibits stop teaching history and begin delivering political sermons. America’s failures are magnified, its achievements are buried and its heroes are dragged before a kangaroo court staffed by activists with government salaries.

Every great nation remembers its sins. A serious country also remembers the courage, sacrifice and genius that allowed it to correct those sins, expand liberty and become the most prosperous nation in human history. The left’s Smithsonian apparently preferred a simpler script: America guilty, radicals righteous, taxpayers billed for admission.

Trump has now ripped up that script.

The order does not demand that museums erase painful chapters or manufacture a fairy tale. It demands that the Smithsonian present American history honestly and stop using publicly funded exhibits to divide, discourage and shame the people paying for them.

That distinction will be obvious to Nevada families. The Silver State was built by miners, ranchers, railroad workers, veterans, entrepreneurs and pioneers who crossed unforgiving terrain to build something greater than themselves. Nevadans understand that history can contain hardship without becoming an endless apology for the country’s existence.

Trump carried Nevada in 2024 because working-class voters had grown tired of elites telling them that patriotism was embarrassing, borders were cruel, biological reality was negotiable and every American institution required a left-wing political commissar. The revolt at the ballot box is now reaching the marble halls of Washington’s museums.

America’s 250th anniversary should celebrate the founders who risked execution to declare independence, the soldiers who defended that promise and the generations who expanded it. It should not become another taxpayer-funded struggle session conducted by curators who regard national pride as a pathology.

The Smithsonian was created to preserve America’s treasures, not poison Americans against their inheritance. Trump’s order delivers a blunt message to the cultural ruling class: the exhibits belong to the American people, the history belongs to the American people and the bill has always belonged to the American people.

After years of paying more than $1 billion annually to be lectured about their own country, taxpayers are finally getting a refund in the only currency Washington’s cultural vandals understand: accountability.
