Cracking Down on Fraud: Trump Moves to Crush Scammers and Protect Taxpayers

By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, January 25, 2026 2:00 pm

For years, Washington looked the other way while fraudsters treated the federal government like an open ATM. Disaster aid siphoned off. Benefit programs looted. Student aid abused. Taxpayers left holding the bag. Under President Trump, that era is ending fast.

The Trump Administration has launched an aggressive, government wide crackdown on fraud, targeting criminals who exploit federal programs and rooting out waste before it drains another dollar from working families.

Nowhere is this clearer than at FEMA.

The agency conducted 2,092 fraud investigations, safeguarding up to 1.2 billion dollars from external fraud schemes. That is money meant for Americans rebuilding after disasters, not criminals gaming the system. FEMA also identified 27 internal fraud cases totaling 250,000 dollars, proving that accountability applies inside the bureaucracy as well. The message is simple. No one gets a free pass.

The Secret Service has taken the fight directly to the front lines. Agents completed 22 anti card skimming and electronic benefits transfer fraud outreach operations across the country. These efforts prevented an estimated 428 million dollars in fraud losses. Criminal rings targeting benefit cards were stopped before they could empty accounts meant for families who actually need help.

Student aid fraud has also been a major target. The Administration blocked more than 1 billion dollars in fraudulent federal student aid claims. For years, scam schools and bad actors milked the system while students and taxpayers paid the price. That pipeline is being shut down.

The crackdown is especially urgent in states like Minnesota, where fraud schemes have exploded in recent years. Federal programs meant to help vulnerable communities were instead hijacked by organized criminals, with little resistance from political leaders more interested in excuses than enforcement. President Trump is not tolerating it.

To confront the problem head on, Trump established a new Department of Justice division dedicated to national fraud enforcement. This is not a press release operation. It is a permanent structure designed to investigate, prosecute, and dismantle complex fraud networks that cross state lines and drain billions from taxpayers.

This approach marks a sharp break from the past. Instead of throwing more money at broken systems, the Trump Administration is locking down programs, enforcing the law, and demanding results. Fraud is no longer treated as the cost of doing business. It is treated as a crime.

For Nevada taxpayers, the stakes are obvious. Every dollar lost to fraud is a dollar not spent on real disaster relief, real education, or real public safety. Cracking down on fraud is not just about balance sheets. It is about fairness and trust.

President Trump is restoring both. While others talk about expanding government, this Administration is making sure the government works honestly, efficiently, and for the people who pay the bills.

Fraudsters had their run. Accountability has arrived.
