FACTORY COMEBACK: White House Touts Manufacturing Surge as Nevada Industrial Base Keeps Growing

By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, October 12, 2026 6:00 am

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — President Donald Trump’s White House is declaring an American manufacturing comeback, pointing to rising factory employment, higher blue-collar wages, surging industrial investment and record goods exports as evidence that the administration’s tariff and tax policies are pulling production back onto U.S. soil.

A new 14-page report from the White House Council of Economic Advisers says manufacturing employment has increased by 72,000 jobs so far in 2026, reversing losses during the final two years of the Biden administration. Durable-goods manufacturing alone has added 101,000 positions this year, including gains in metals and transportation equipment.

The report places Trump’s tariffs, tax policy and incentives for domestic investment at the center of that shift. Manufacturing workers have seen nominal wages rise 7.9 percent since January 2025, according to the CEA, while wages for production workers excluding managers have climbed 9.2 percent. After adjusting for inflation, the White House calculates that the latter group is earning nearly $2,500 more annually than when Trump took office.

Factory construction is moving in the same direction. The administration says employment tied to nonresidential specialty-trade construction has risen by more than 110,000 since January 2025 as companies build and expand plants across the country. Trump’s tax law allowing businesses to immediately deduct qualifying factory investments is also credited with pushing manufacturers to move previously shelved projects forward.

The factory floor itself is getting busier. The CEA says semiconductor and printed-circuit-board production is up 22 percent year over year, business-vehicle manufacturing is up 16.1 percent, transit-equipment production is up 11.2 percent and computer and electronics manufacturing has risen 8.7 percent. S&P Global separately reported that U.S. manufacturing growth accelerated sharply in September, with American factory output recording one of the strongest performances among advanced economies.

The White House also points to trade figures showing American goods exports up 15 percent from the same point last year. Through August, exports of computers were up 46 percent, semiconductors 26 percent, aluminum 34 percent and computer accessories 52 percent. The administration argues that a simultaneous surge in imports of machinery and other capital goods signals companies are buying the equipment necessary to build more products inside the United States.

Nevada has plenty riding on that trend.

A 2026 manufacturing analysis from the Governor’s Office of Economic Development estimates Nevada has 52,585 manufacturing jobs, up nearly 79 percent since 2016. Reno’s manufacturing employment has surged nearly 188 percent over that decade, while the Las Vegas metro area has grown roughly 42 percent. Nevada now has more than 1,800 payrolled manufacturing business locations, according to the state analysis.

The CEA report is the Trump administration’s own assessment of its economic record, and its conclusions about how much credit tariffs and tax policy deserve are part of an ongoing economic debate.

But the underlying industrial expansion is increasingly difficult to dismiss. Factories are hiring, production is climbing, companies are pouring capital into American plants and Nevada’s once-small manufacturing sector is becoming a substantially larger piece of the state’s economy.

For an economy long told that America’s factories belonged to the past, Washington’s latest numbers tell a very different story: somebody forgot to inform the factory floor.
