IMPEACHMENT, AGAIN: Trump Resolution Hits House Floor as GOP Targets Titus, Horsford

House Democrats were forced back into the impeachment fight Tuesday after Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, brought another resolution seeking to remove President Donald Trump from office, giving Republicans fresh ammunition against vulnerable Democrats including Nevada Reps. Dina Titus and Steven Horsford.

Green introduced H. Res. 1486 as a privileged resolution accusing Trump of high crimes and misdemeanors over his administration’s immigration enforcement policies. The House ultimately voted 232-147 to table the measure, killing the latest impeachment attempt. Forty-seven members voted present.

The resolution did not have the blessing of House Democrat leadership. The Washington Post reported that party leaders recommended against advancing Green’s effort, and 18 Democrats joined Republicans in voting to table it while dozens more voted present. Still, 147 members voted against tabling the resolution, which would have allowed the impeachment push to continue.

Republicans immediately seized on the spectacle as a preview of what they argue a Democrat-controlled House would look like after November.

That argument has particular resonance in Nevada, where Titus and Horsford are already being hammered by Republicans over their party’s leftward drift. Earlier this month, both voted against a House resolution condemning socialism in all its forms. The resolution passed 220-192, with only eight Democrats voting in favor.

The National Republican Congressional Committee tied the two issues together, arguing that impeachment politics and the party’s ideological left flank would dominate a Democrat House majority.

“This is Dina Titus, Steven Horsford, and Democrats’ full agenda: Impeachment, Obstruction, Socialism, Repeat,” NRCC spokesman Christian Martinez said. “Give Titus, Horsford and Democrats power, and they will put the American people through a never-ending doom cycle of political theater.”

Republicans have been making that case for more than a year. The NRCC previously ran advertising in Nevada warning that a Democrat House majority could renew impeachment efforts against Trump while pursuing policies Republicans characterize as socialist. One ad featured an earlier Titus remark saying, “I’d like to impeach the bastard right now.”

Democrats have argued that oversight of Trump and his administration is a legitimate congressional responsibility, while party leaders’ decision to oppose Green’s latest resolution underscored divisions over whether impeachment should be pursued.

For Republicans, however, the floor fight handed them exactly the contrast they wanted heading into November: while voters are focused on taxes, the border, crime and the economy, impeachment is once again consuming oxygen on Capitol Hill.
