Newsom Lands in Vegas as Nevada Democrats Double Down on Californication

By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, March 5, 2026 8:00 am

California Governor Gavin Newsom touched down in Las Vegas on Wednesday to meet with Nevada Democratic Party Chair Daniele Monroe-Moreno.

The visit comes as Nevada Democrats continue drifting toward the same far-left playbook that has turned California into a warning sign for the rest of the country.

Newsom is not just another Democratic governor passing through town. He is one of the most aggressive progressive figures in American politics and a likely future presidential contender whose policies have reshaped California.

Nevada Democrats appear eager to follow. Newsom’s energy agenda has already hammered the region. His regulatory push forced multiple California oil refineries to shut down, squeezing supply across the West and driving up gas prices for families in neighboring states including Nevada.

At the same time, Nevada Democrats in Congress have backed many of the same green energy mandates that helped fuel California’s price spikes. Then there is the border.

California has spent years operating as a sanctuary state while offering free health care to illegal immigrants and shielding criminal offenders from federal immigration enforcement. President Donald J. Trump and congressional Republicans moved in the opposite direction, securing the border and driving crime down to levels not seen in a century.

Democrats like Susie Lee tried to block those efforts. And while Republicans delivered major relief for working Americans through policies like no tax on tips, overtime, and retirement income, Newsom refused to adopt similar measures in California. Democrats in Congress, including Lee, even voted against the no tax on tips proposal.

Yet Nevada Democrats are rolling out the welcome mat. The visit raises a series of questions that Monroe-Moreno and other Democrats cozying up to Newsom now have to answer.

How can Nevada Democrats claim they want to lower energy costs while embracing the very policies that drove California prices through the roof? How can voters trust Democrats to keep communities safe when Attorney General Aaron Ford is facing an ethics investigation and members of Nevada’s congressional delegation opposed securing the border?

And perhaps the most obvious question of all. Why do Nevada Democrats keep copying California?

Republicans argue the contrast is becoming impossible for voters to ignore. President Trump and congressional Republicans are delivering tangible results for working families. Border security. Tax relief. Policies aimed at lowering costs and restoring economic stability.

Meanwhile, Nevada Democrats are hosting the architect of California’s progressive experiment.

RNC spokesman Nick Poche put it bluntly: “Democrats are selling out to the spoiled, phony rich kid governor from California for years. President Trump and Republicans are delivering major tax cuts and keeping Nevadans safe, unlike Democrats.”

In a state where voters have grown increasingly skeptical of California style politics spilling across the border, Newsom’s Las Vegas stop may end up reinforcing the very contrast Democrats are trying to avoid.

Republicans say the choice is getting clearer. Nevada first or Californication.
