OPINION: “Option 3” The Best Abortion Solution for Both Sides
By Paul White, March 18, 2026 12:00 pm
The hotly contested, forever-argument about abortion offers a pregnant woman 2 simple options. You get one . . . or you don’t.
But those traditional choices are also simplistic and misleading.
- They ignore the complexities on both sides of this issue.
- They ignore the underlying reason why the abortion argument has never been resolved.
The traditional “Pro Choice” option regarding abortion cares almost nothing about a child’s life before birth.
The traditional “Pro Life” option cares not enough about a child’s life after birth.
That’s why “Option 3” – the only REAL choice and solution to the abortion issue needs to be seriously considered.
Option 1: “Pro Choice”
Regardless of your political position, no one should believe that America’s 1.2 million abortions per year are just a minor medical procedure, similar to teeth cleaning.
Abortions are nothing less than intentional destruction of the miracle of human life. They’re a life-altering decision. Women who choose to have them frequently experience long-term mental and emotional effects.
Option 2: “Pro Life”
Similarly, no one should believe that the 1.5 million women who choose to give birth to unwanted children each year are selfless heroes: motivated solely by their compassion for human life.
These women typically and naively bring unwanted children into the world for a variety of poor motives. Statistically, unwanted children suffer disproportionate and lifelong challenges with emotional abandonment, mental health, addiction, poverty, and physical abuse, in addition to feeling like they were short-changed regarding future possibilities.
Thank God there is an Option 3!
OPTION 3: PROACTIVE PARENTING
Proactive Parenting is the only real solution to the “Abortion Wars,” but is almost never mentioned by Pro-Life or Pro-Choice proponents.
It’s imperative for both sides to break this silence. Option 3 could greatly reduce the numbers of both abortions AND unwanted children.
Proactive parenting would reduce unwanted pregnancies, thus negating the need for a woman to have to choose between two equally horrible options: having an abortion or bearing an unwanted child.
Avoiding Unwanted Pregnancies
Proactive parenting offers parents numerous ways to help their daughters avoid unwanted pregnancies. This is most effectively done when parents implement the following actions as early as possible with their children.
- From childhood, parents can raise their sons and daughters to have love and obedience towards God, and a respect for the biblical standard of moral behavior: keeping sex within the bounds of a committed marriage.
- Parents can teach their children to respect, protect, and care for the miracle of life . . . ALL life.
- Proactive parenting should also include sons: teaching them the importance of ensuring that unselfishness and honesty play major roles in their relationships with females.
- Proactive parenting should include lobbying legislators to make it quicker and more affordable for qualified couples to adopt unwanted children. Married couples wanting to adopt a newborn child in Nevada have a 1-to-3 year wait, and must pay up to $50,000. Over 1,000 children in Nevada are currently waiting and hoping to be adopted.
- Lastly, from a practical standpoint, parents can teach older children that there is NO excuse for becoming “accidentally” pregnant, even if a woman has a one-night moral lapse in behavior and self-control. There are over a dozen different types of readily available birth control, (including the still-debated) “morning-after” medication.
Pope St. John Paul II once said, “Every human life is sacred.”
If every parent, church, and school would commit to educating our children with “Option 3” and its guidelines for Proactive Parenting, the sacredness of life would become more prevalent, and the number of abortions and unwanted children would diminish until they virtually disappeared.
