In our 20-part series, Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill: Nevada’s Wins and Losses, we face a harsh hit to Nevada’s 700,000 Medicaid enrollees. The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (Sec. 2402) cuts Medicaid by $880 billion, with work requirements risking coverage for thousands. The CBO estimates 11.8 million lose coverage nationwide by 2034.
Elko nurse Sarah sees patients lose dialysis access, overwhelming clinics. Nevada’s 47th-ranked healthcare system, with only 1.9 doctors per 1,000 residents, can’t cope. In 2020, Medicaid expansions saved 5,000 Nevadans from uninsured hospital bills. KFF polls show 83% support Medicaid, but the bill prioritizes savings.
Nevada’s compassion defines us, from rural hospitals to Vegas charities. As coverage shrinks, ask: Can we rebuild a safety net, or will our most vulnerable fall through the cracks?
