REFUND REVENGE: Trump Tax Cuts Pump $43B More Back to Americans as Susie Lee’s “Crumbs” Vote Comes Back to Bite

Americans received nearly $43 billion more in federal tax refunds this year after President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans enacted a sweeping package of tax cuts that included No Tax on Tips, No Tax on Overtime and new relief for seniors.
A newly released Government Accountability Office report found the IRS issued approximately $296 billion in refunds during the 2026 filing season, up $43 billion, or 17 percent, from the previous year. The average refund climbed $333 to $3,275, an 11 percent increase. The IRS attributed the jump in part to millions of taxpayers claiming new deductions for qualified tips and overtime created under Trump’s Working Families Tax Cuts.
For Nevada, there may be no state where the numbers carry more political weight.
Nevada has the highest concentration of tipped workers in the country, with casino dealers, bartenders, cocktail servers, restaurant workers, hairstylists and other service employees forming an outsized share of the Silver State economy. Trump first unveiled his No Tax on Tips promise during a Las Vegas campaign rally in June 2024, transforming what began as a Nevada-focused pitch into one of the signature economic promises of his return to the White House.
Trump and Republicans then did something exceedingly unfashionable in Washington: they actually passed it.
Democrat Rep. Susie Lee voted against the final Republican tax package on July 3, 2025, joining every House Democrat in opposing legislation that included the tip deduction, overtime deduction and additional tax relief for seniors. Lee’s own congressional office proudly announced her vote against the bill that day.
Then came the sneering.
Lee subsequently blasted the Trump tax law as providing “temporary crumbs for working families in Southern Nevada,” even as Nevadans began claiming the very tax deductions contained inside it.
Those “crumbs” have now helped push nationwide refunds $43 billion higher.
That is an inconvenient pile of crumbs.
Lee has separately supported standalone legislation eliminating taxes on tips and later cosponsored legislation seeking to make the deduction permanent. But when Republicans put No Tax on Tips, No Tax on Overtime and senior tax relief into a bill that could actually become law, Lee voted no. President Trump signed it anyway. Now the IRS and GAO are counting the results in billions of dollars.
The political split could hardly be cleaner in Southern Nevada, where working families have spent years getting hammered by rising housing, grocery and energy costs. Republicans went to voters promising that Washington would take less out of their paychecks. Democrats warned of catastrophe. The refunds arrived anyway.
The White House reported in July that more than 29 million workers had claimed the overtime deduction and more than 35 million seniors had claimed the new senior tax relief, while millions more claimed No Tax on Tips.
RNC Spokesperson Nick Poche seized on the new refund figures to hammer Lee.
“The numbers don’t lie: President Trump and Republicans put more money back into Nevadans’ pockets. Republicans delivered the largest middle-class tax cut in history, while Susie Lee fought to take more of your hard-earned paycheck,” Poche said.
Nevada voters have heard years of Washington rhetoric about “affordability.” The latest tax-season numbers offer something considerably more tangible: receipts.
And unfortunately for Susie Lee, those receipts also come with her “NO” vote attached.
