In a series of tweets, Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto has consistently parroted Democratic calls to end the filibuster in order to pass voting rights legislation that Republicans have said would federalize state and local elections and eliminate election integrity protections, such as voter identification.
Today, Cortez Masto used Martin Luther King Day to call on her colleagues to “honor him and pass critical voting rights legislation”:
Last Thursday, Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema torpedoed any chances of eliminating the filibuster during her impassioned speech:
“These bills help the symptoms of the disease, but they do not fully address the disease itself,” Sinema said. “And while I continue to support these bills, I will not support separate actions that worsen the underlying disease of division infecting our country.”
Sinema outlined the dangers of eliminating the filibuster, noting that when one party “only negotiates with itself, policy will inextricably be pushed from the middle towards the extremes.”
“It is clear two-party strategies are not working, not for either side, and especially not for the country,” she said. “So it’s comfortable for members of each party, particularly those who spent their career in party politics, to think that their respective party alone can move the country forward. Party control becomes a goal in and of itself.”
Two days later, Cortez Masto seemingly lashed out at Republicans and her colleague, Sen. Sinema, in a tweet:
Throughout history, elections have been plagued by accusations of fraud. The 2016 and 2020 elections accusations ranged from the Robert-Mueller-debunked conspiracy theory of Russian interference to claims of illegal ballot harvesting and ghost voters.
Yet, in the face of Covid restrictions and a global pandemic, resulting in multiple states implementing new voting procedures–like mail-in ballots and drop boxes, Americans cast over 150 million votes in the 2020 presidential election. President Joe Biden received 81,268,924 million votes, the most votes of any presidential candidate in history.
As The Globe has reported, Cortez Masto plays the moderate but partners with radicals. Her latest accusations of voter suppression, after a record-turn-out election, are signs of what Sen. Sinema refers to as “a disease of division” where “party control becomes a goal in and of itself.”
A recent poll showed 54 percent of Americans believe Biden was the legitimate winner of the election. The number was a 64 percent in April. In the wake of the Joe Biden’s presidency, cratering polls numbers, and amplified political, partisan rhetoric, a surprising 51% of Americans believe that US democracy is on the brink of extinction.
In Martin Luther King’s words, if “the time is always right to do what is right” Cortez Masto could do what is right and admit that eliminating the filibuster could give the Democratic party unilateral control over the three branches of government and thereby metastasize the disease of partisan divide by fundamentally changing voting laws, or any and all laws, through a divisive partisan vote.
