OPINION: Governor Lombardo: Butt OUT of Washoe Elections and Do YOUR Job.
By Paul White, May 3, 2026 12:00 pm
What does a first-term Republican governor do when re-election time is approaching, and he has no major accomplishments to show for the past 4 years, other than swatting-back the usual armload of gadfly bills from the Left.
If you’re Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo, you ignore the vital problems you were elected to solve (water, electricity, education, etc.).
Instead, Lombardo has chosen to distract voters from his do-nothing record by portraying himself to his RINO base as a powerful king-maker in local elections.
The problem is, the Governor has allowed the sycophants he surrounds himself with to determine which candidates he endorses. In turn, this has led to dangerously wrong recommendations of the worst possible candidates for leadership positions in Washoe County.
Example 1:
Appointing a Replacements for the County Board of Commissioners
Three years ago, Lombardo had to make an appointment to fill a Republican vacancy on the Washoe County Board of Commissioners. There were several strong Conservative candidates who had relevant experience for this challenging job. Lombardo chose to fill the position with a proclaimed Republican whose strongest qualification was experience in running the Reno Rodeo.
Since receiving Lombardo’s completely undeserved appointment, this woman has been what you would expect from a go-along-to-get-along RINO. She has repeatedly voted in lockstep with the equally unqualified Democrats on the Commission, almost without exception.
Lombardo could have selected a strong conservative for this vacancy, instead of this de facto liberal. If the Governor had done that, Conservatives would have held a majority and many of the county’s present problems could have been avoided.
Example 2:
The Reno Mayoral Race
For almost 12 years, Reno has been irresponsibly misruled by America’s most unqualified mayor.
This year, the city has a chance to elect the best mayoral candidate imaginable: someone who knows how to dig out from under the mountain of problems left by the departing Mayor.
This candidate is a lifelong, boot-straps visionary businessman, with equal portions of business savvy, tough-but-fair negotiating ability, and a collaborative charm. (Trump-ish? Absolutely).
This man would be the type of mayor Reno needs to straighten out its disastrous present situation. These problems include: unmanageable debt, a self-inflicted and out of control homeless problem, and Planning Commission recommendations that rank among the worst development ideas any community ever received.
But this ideal candidate for Mayor (who would make an excellent governor himself), was apparently too threatening for the Governor to endorse.
Instead, Lombardo decided to throw his support behind a fully unprepared City Council member. One of her proudest accomplishments is years of serving on the Planning Commission.
That’s the same group whose lack of expertise shares the blame for much of Reno’s ghetto-like over-building of apartments, and inability to prevent developers from outwitting the City Council at every turn.
This is the kind of “experienced” leadership that Lombardo wants to saddle Reno with.
Example 3:
The District Attorney Race.
The choice between the 2 candidates in this race is starkly clear in terms of character, accomplishments, and ethical behavior (or the lack thereof). Surely, NO one – not even the Governor, could fail to select challenger Wes Duncan as the best candidate in this race.
But Joe Lombardo got it wrong . . . again.
The Governor did what he always does: posture, promise, fail to do sufficient research on competing candidates, and then make wrong endorsements.
Terribly wrong endorsements, like the one Lombardo made in supporting the incumbent DA.
Challenger Wes Duncan, is everything a community wants and needs in a District Attorney. He consistently demonstrates great legal expertise, high morals, and full respect for the Constitution and local laws.
The incumbent, Chris Hicks, is moral weakness, professional incompetence, and denial of the truth . . . personified. Voters will know all they need to know to make a wise choice in this race by reading just ONE of the numerous examples of Hicks’ professional behavior published in the media within the past year.
District Attorneys: Essential for Public Safety – That’s Why Washoe County Needs a New One
Nevada Globe – April 9, 2025
Let’s hope that Washoe voters:
• Take more time to learn about the candidates than Governor Lombardo did.
• Ignore the Governor’s politically motivated endorsements,
and vote for candidates who possess the needed character and competence to rescue Washoe County from its flailing downward spiral.
