OPINION: Lombardo’s Veto Spree Shocks Democrats – But Did He Go Too Far?
By Larry Waters, September 18, 2025 6:00 am
This is Part 2 of our 10-part series, “Lombardo’s Nevada Showdown: The Fight for 2026.”
Here’s the mess: Nevada’s legislature, stacked with Democrats, pushed through bills that could balloon spending and erode local control, like a bipartisan ballot drop-box measure that critics say invites fraud. The clash peaked when Lombardo vetoed a record 87 bills in the 2025 session, per other media’s veto tracker from May 2025, outpacing his 2023 haul and drawing fire from opponents who claim he’s obstructing progress on voting access and social programs.
His fix? Signing 518 out of 605 bills, including ones boosting teacher pay and housing funds, as detailed in his June 13, 2025, statement on the governor’s site, positioning himself as a pragmatic gatekeeper against overreach. He gets points for holding the line on fiscal sanity, avoiding tax hikes that could’ve stung working families, but for reelection, he must refine this by explaining vetoes in plain talk during debates, showing they’re pro-Nevada, not anti-Democrat, and why he’s superior to Ford, who might rubber-stamp party agendas. Amp it up with ads tying vetoes to real wins, like safer streets.
Economic policies are next – don’t miss Part 3, where we unpack if Lombardo’s job growth claims hold water or if they’re just hot air.
