Biden Bows, Harris Blows Past Contenders for POTUS In Fundraising Blitz

Yesterday, President Joe Biden reportedly abandoned his reelection campaign while recovering from COVID-19 at his home in Delaware. The president’s letter was not on official letterhead, nor has the president been seen in public since he cut short a campaign swing through Las Vegas, Nevada, due to his diagnosis. His announcement was released on X (formerly Twitter). Following the announcement, the President Biden’s X account quickly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for President.

Democratic party chairs in a number of states, Democratic officials, and hundreds of democratic delegates have thrown their support behind Vice President Harris. Harris has blown past any contenders for POTUS in fundraising, amassing ~$50 million in the hours that followed the announcement. Yet, it remains unclear if Harris will become the nominee or how the Democratic party will select a candidate.

CNN reports:

The Democratic committee that will determine the rules for the party’s nomination will meet again on Wednesday afternoon, the committee’s co-chairs have announced.

“It is now the Committee’s responsibility to implement a framework to select a new nominee, which will be open, transparent, fair, and orderly,” said co-chairs Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and longtime Democratic operative Leah Daughtry.

 “The process presented for consideration will be comprehensive, it will be fair, and it will be expeditious.”

Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford, Nevada Democratic Party Chair Daniele Monroe-Moreno, legislative leaders Nicole Cannizzaro and Steve Yeager, U.S. Senators Catherine Cortez-Masto and Jacky Rosen, and U.S. Representatives Steven Horsford, Susie Lee, and Dina Titus each voiced their support for Harris.

Nevada Democrats now have until September to submit their presidential ticket to the secretary of state to appear on the ballot.

According to Nevada statute, each major political party must provide the names of their candidates for president and vice president to the secretary of state by 5 p.m. on the first business day of September of the year of a presidential election. The amendment was voted on and approved by the Legislative Commission in September 2023.

The Trump-Vance campaign must now retool their strategy as they await the announcement of Vice President Harris’ potential running mate. On Truth Social, Trump demanded that the Republican party be “reimbursed for fraud.” 

President Biden is expected to address the public this week, however any details related to the address or an update on the President’s health, have not been provided.
