LAS VEGAS – A Las Vegas high school senior is one of 105 students across the United States to receive a $25,000 college scholarship.
Sierra Duran, 17, of Las Vegas Academy of the Arts is a 2023 Horatio Alger scholar.
Duran, who lives in North Las Vegas, said her father died when she was 1 and she grew up in a single-parent family.
She explained that she didn’t want to burden her mother financially by attending college. “Getting any scholarship helps.”
School counselors told Duran about the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans scholarship. It was based on financial need and academics, she noticed.
Nationally, scholarship recipients for 2023 had a 3.95 GPA and a $23,995 household income, according to a recent statement.
Duran received the scholarship through email during one of her final exams in May.
